Dir. Zeshawn Ali | 2020, 82min

“An auspicious debut...a poetic meditation on life, death, and the struggle to survive in between”
—Filmmaker Magazine

In an area of Newark where too many funerals commemorate tragically short lives, Hanif, an older man with a troubled past, works as a casket maker and ritual body washer. Committed to his work and his Islamic faith, he is also a mentor to Furquan, a confident 12-year-old from a rough home, and Naz, a 17-year-old who has been fighting through his own struggles as a young Black man growing up in Newark. As Furquan and Naz both face increasing challenges, Hanif, struggling with the fear that he has failed as a mentor, begins to fall into a downward spiral. Shot in exquisite black and white, Zeshawn Ali's beautifully observed story marks the arrival of a lyrical new voice and a meditation on the importance of community, faith, brotherhood, and redemption.
