Dir. Amjad Abu Alala | 2019
With Mustafa Shehata, Islam Mubark, Mahmoud Elsaraj

Haunted by a prophecy that he will die at age 20, a young man escapes his mother’s watchful eye and begins to question his destiny in this auspicious debut from Sudanese filmmaker Amjad Abu Alala.

During her son’s naming ceremony, a Sheikh predicts that Sakina’s child Muzamil will die at the age of 20. Haunted by this prophecy, Sakina becomes overly protective of her son, who grows up under the looming threat of his fate. When Muzamil escapes Sakina’s ever-watchful eye, he encounters friends, ideas, and challenges that make him question his destiny. Director Amjad Abu Alala’s auspicious debut—Sudan’s first Oscar submission and winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Lion of the Future Award for best Debut Feature—offers a moving meditation on what it means to live in the present.
