Filmmaker Janicza Bravo brings a now-iconic series of uproarious viral tweets to dazzling cinematic life with this stranger-than-fiction saga of Detroit waitress A’Ziah King, aka Zola (played by newcomer Taylour Paige). Zola strikes up a new friendship with one of her customers, Stefani (Keough), who seduces her to join her for a weekend of stripping and partying in Florida for some quick cash. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of “hoeism” rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters, and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale. Bravo’s raucous comedy, which she co-wrote with Slave Play’s Jeremy O. Harris, finally opens in theaters after premiering at Sundance in 2020 and being held back from wide release for over a year.
