A Self-Induced Hallucination
- 5PM
In this archival documentary about The Slenderman, a fictional horror creature born from the internet and linked to real-world crime, Jane Schoenbrun raises questions of how and why this boogeyman was brought to life by the internet community through stories, doctored fan art, video games, and videos. The film looks at the human impulse to impose meaning—on even the darkest fictions—as a coping mechanism to insulate oneself from reality.

This hybrid indie drama-horror film offers a haunting depiction of coming of age online. After entering the World’s Fair Challenge, an online role-playing horror game, teenage Casey loses her grip on reality.

In this paired feature and short, as in much of her work, Marnie Ellen Hertzler explores the personal relationships and technology that define us, often weaving live performance and installation into her films.
