Two women in 1970s Hungary search for fulfillment in this new restoration of feminist trailblazer Márta Mészáros’ poignant drama. A middle-aged factory worker, who wants to have a child with her married lover, forms an unlikely—and much needed—bond with a teenage ward of the state who is seeking emancipation in order to marry her boyfriend. As the two women grow closer, their relationship speaks to the wider political forces that shape women’s lives as they balance love, marriage, and motherhood in a search for self determination.
