American Matchmaker
- 3:45PM
Edgar G. Ulmer’s last Yiddish movie was also his most modern: an art deco, romantic musical-comedy about male ambivalence and Jewish assimilation. Leo Fuchs—known as "the Yiddish Fred Astaire"— plays Nat Silver, a neurotic, urbane, hero in the style of Woody Allen, who, despite being an elegant and eligible bachelor-turned-matchmaker, can never seem to close the marriage deal. Ulmer integrates a riot of acting styles, from broadly comic to movingly dramatic.
