Part of Film series The Method on Film
Directed by Arnold Laven | 1958

With Eartha Kitt, Sammy Davis, Jr., Henry Scott

The Group Theatre and the Actors Studio weren’t the only game in town when it came to a new American approach to acting. Uptown, companies like the Negro People’s Theater, the Negro Ensemble Company, the Rose McClendon Players, and The American Negro Theater ushered in generations of great African American actors, writers, and directors. Anna Lucasta, one of the American Negro Theatre’s greatest successes, even ran on Broadway for over two years. The film version, starring Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis, Jr., follows Anna Lucasta (Kitt)—thrown out of her home at 19 by her alcoholic father, and walking the streets of San Diego ever since—in a noir-inflected tale of family loyalty, money, and misbegotten love.

Pre-screening discussion with dramaturg, director, and archivist Arminda Thomas.
