Part of Film series Intimate Epics
Directed by Stanley Kubrick | 1975

With Ryan O’Neal, Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee

With sardonic wit and decadent detail, Stanley Kubrick takes on the genre of historical drama with magnificent results. Adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel about a wiley Irish peasant’s ascent to the English aristocracy, Barry Lyndon is a study in excess. Kubrick used pioneering cinematic techniques—including shooting almost every scene in a gorgeous suffusion of natural light—to capture Lyndon’s picaresque journey through poverty, battle, riches, romance, and moral depravity with the clarity and brilliance of an 18th-century painting.
