Directed by Spike Lee | 1996
“I want more depictions of the lives of creative Black women that feel as real as this does. More of the acting we know we have to do in real life on screen. More Prince. More worlds. Plus, Naomi Campbell smoking a joint is a life-sustaining image.”
—Martine Syms

An aspiring NYC actress-turned-phone-sex-operator, called Girl 6, struggles and slides between reality and fantasy in this 1996 Spike Lee joint with a soundtrack by Prince. With a screenplay by Suzan-Lori Parks—who went on to write the Pulitzer- winning play Topdog/Underdog—the film stars Theresa Randle in a role that arcs from innocent to bold, with appearances by Lee, Isaiah Washington, Naomi Campbell, Madonna, and other big names.
