We hold where study

Dir. Wu Tsang, 2017, 19min

“Duets for a present that doesn’t refuse any of the gravity of the past.”—Martine Syms

In this 2017 short by filmmaker and performance artist Wu Tsang, dancers move through a series of duets choreographed by Ligia Lewis with performer Jonathan Gonzalez, and boychild with performer Josh Johnson, and music by Bendik Giske. In this collaborative work, Tsang explores fluid, connected, and constantly evolving ideas of Black, queer, and trans identities.

Happy Together

Dir. Wong Kar-wai, 1997, 97min
In Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish with English subtitles

“Submerged encounters are suspended out of time against urgent political and historical realities.”—Martine Syms

One of the most searing romances of the 90s and a celebrated influence on Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, Wong Kar Wai crafts an emotionally raw, lushly stylized portrait of a relationship in breakdown—shot by acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle in both luminous monochrome and luscious saturated color.

Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung are a couple traveling through Argentina, locked in a turbulent cycle of infatuation and destructive jealousy as they break up, make up, and fall apart again and again. Setting out to depict the dynamics of a gay relationship on the cusp of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, when the country’s queer community suddenly faced an uncertain future, Wong’s volatile exploration of displacement and desire swoons with the ache and exhilaration of love at its heart-tearing extremes.
