Mississippi Masala
This passionate indie romance tells the story of an Indian woman (Choudhury) who grows up in Mississippi after her family's forced exodus from Uganda during the oppressive dictatorship of Idi Amin. As she becomes a young adult and falls in love with the Black carpet cleaner (Washington) who services her family's hotel, prejudices between their Indian and African American communities are laid bare. Tackling thorny issues of racism, colorism, culture clash, and displacement with humor and keen insight, director Mira Nair serves up a sweet, sexy, and radical celebration of love’s power to break down the barriers between us.
