Mysteries of Lisbon
- 7PM
Only the ingenious Chilean director Raúl Ruiz—a man known for his successful adaptation of Proust, Le Temps retrouvé—could transform this expansive, dreamlike web of stories into a striking work of cinema. Mysteries of Lisbon is adapted from Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco’s three-volume Gothic novel about an orphan seeking to uncover the truth of his family, which takes place across three decades, including the Peninsular War, and features more than a hundred characters. Surreal and bewitching, Ruiz’s sinuous drama guides audiences through a labyrinth of histories, memories, and betrayals.
