Directed by Stanley Kwan | 1987

With Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Alex Man, Emily Chu

Newly restored and presented in a rare theatrical run, this luscious gem from Stanley Kwan pays homage to the Hong Kong director’s city with a sweeping ghost story. Musical icons Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung bring an androgenous allure to their roles as a courtesan and the son of a wealthy family, who fall in love in the opulent tea houses in the 1930s and seal their romance with a suicide pact. Fifty years later, in a very different Hong Kong, her ghost appears to find out why her lover never met her in the afterlife. A reckoning of nostalgia and history, this sensuous story of what-might-have-been is a striking meditation on lost love and lost time.
