Sepa: Our Lord of Miracles
- 7PM
This long lost Walter Saxer documentary comes to BAM for its first ever theatrical showing. With echoes of the work of Werner Herzog (the two were frequent collaborators), Saxer crafts a fascinating, empathic portrait of the residents of an experimental open-air penal colony in the Peruvian Amazon. Housing 800 incarcerated people at its highest and one at its lowest—including poets, political prisoners, and their families—this wall-less and largely secretive penitentiary existed in varying degrees of operation from 1951 to 1993. Saxer’s documentary remains the only in-depth public record of this singular and harrowing experiment in criminal justice.
