Directed by Gillian Armstrong | 1982

With Jo Kennedy, Margo Lee, Ross O’Donovan

“Bursting with bangers, high-rise coifs, and costumes, this film is big, bold, brash, and bouncing to its own beat.”
—Film Daze

Director Gillian Armstrong (Little Women, 1994) brings her signature feminist style to this Australian musical comedy about Jackie (Kennedy), a Sydney teenager who dreams of leaving her family’s struggling diner behind to become a punk-rock sensation. Complete with kangaroo costumes, inflatable shark synchronized swimming sequences, and “naked” tight-rope walking, Jackie journeys from a fever dream of a performance at a local talent show to abandoning her family for her fame—until her mother is left in financial ruin. An oddball coming-of-age story, Jackie and her 14-year-old cousin and manager Angus learn what truly matters after giving it all up.
