Part of Film series The Method on Film
Directed by William Greaves | 1968
“A movie from the past that's also eerily of a piece with the film culture of now and tomorrow.”
—Boston Globe

Documentarian William Greaves’ meta-cinematic mind-bender lets loose three film crews in Central Park with minimal instructions, leaving them to draw their own conclusions about the director’s intentions (and competence). The resulting film-within-a-film-within-a-film is a one-of-a-kind counterculture masterpiece that offers hints to Greaves’ immersion in the Actors Studio. “Without being in any overt sense ‘about race,’” wrote A.O. Scott in The New York Times, the film “is mischievously eloquent on the struggles of the Black artist in a supposedly liberal society.” This funhouse mirror reflects the central themes and questions of the Method—authenticity, performance, and the link between internal and external truth.

The best of Lee Strasberg’s Method is elicited in Rod Steiger’s emotionally repressed, Oscar-nominated performance as a Holocaust survivor struggling to forget the past.
