Directed by Alan Parker | 1991

With Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball

“the best structurally unsound movie you’re likely to see for quite a while… The musical sequences are downright combustible, exploding off the screen.”
—The Miami Herald

Based on the novel by Roddy Doyle and directed by the incomparable Alan Parker (Bugsy Malone, Evita), The Commitments follows nine working-class Irish kids as they strive to become soul singers. After purchasing their gear on the black market and earnestly rehearsing above a snooker bar, they land their musical break at a church community center by claiming to be an anti-heroin campaign. In this hilarious—yet dramatic—overview of their short career, the band mates are plagued by a lack of money, ongoing arguments, and clandestine hookups. Featuring a cast of real musicians (Parker auditioned thousands of Dublin musicians to fill the roles), this cult classic boasts a soundtrack that found international success.
