Maren Ade’s a laugh-out-loud comedy of father-daughter strife has strong emotional currents and political critique roiling beneath its surface. After his dog dies, perennial practical joker Winfried decides to reconnect with his daughter Ines, a high-power consultant trying to clinch a big deal in Bucharest. When her patience with him hits its limits, instead of going home, Winfried doubles down: he takes on an outrageous alter ego and poses as a life coach in order to become even more involved in Ines’ life. Captured in outstanding performances by Peter Simonischek and Sandra Hüller, their father-daughter relationship evolves in ways both unexpectedly hilarious and deeply moving—and all the more enjoyable when experienced as part of a theatrical audience.

Unfolding across two films, writer-director Joanna Hogg’s lush, dreamlike story of young adulthood, first love, and artistic discovery is at once enrapturing and mysteriously unsettling.

Using pioneering cinematic technique, Stanley Kubrick’s historical drama about a wiley Irish peasant’s ascent to the English aristocracy is a sardonic, decadent masterpiece.

Akira Kurosawa makes a glorious return to the samurai epic, captured in blazing color, in this late career triumph rife with ghostly spirits, battling warlords, and the seductive lure of power.
