Directed by Robert Wise | 1961

With Richard Beymer, Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, Rita Moreno

“Sizzles with dynamic action [...] shrieks with suspense”
—The Boston Globe

Winning 10 Oscars and cementing itself as one of the greatest musicals of all time, this classic retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is set on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the 50s. A Hollywood soundstage offers a painterly vision of New York grit, as the film tracks the ongoing turf battle between two groups being left behind by the city, the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. When two of their own fall in love, the gangs’ violence is taken to a new level. An adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical, film director Robert Wise partnered with Broadway trio Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim to preserve the essence of the stage production while expanding it for the big screen.
