Building on curriculum from BAM’s successful Shakespeare Teaches Students residency program, this two-week program introduces beginners and intermediate artists to the Bard’s work. Accomplished guest artists lead acting exercises, improvisation, and scene study—plus workshops in theater design, clowning, stage combat, movement, and vocals. At the conclusion of the class, students present an abridged version of a Shakespeare play for friends and family at the BAM Fisher.

Students will:
• Develop language and critical-thinking skills
• Increase coordination and body awareness
• Build self-confidence

About the Instructor:
Melissa Brown is a performer, writer, director, storyteller, teacher and collaborator. In addition to teaching at BAM, she is also a teaching artist with The Shakespeare Society and The Moth and faculty at CUNY Bronx Community College, where she teaches communications. She is Co-Artistic Director and resident playwright of the theatre company, ARTBARN, which collaboratively creates original, site-specific work each year. She has her MFA from The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting at The George Washington University.
