Elif Batuman is the author of the new novel The Idiot and the essay collection The Possessed, which was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics' Circle Award. Between 2010 and 2013, she was based in Istanbul and wrote about Turkey for The New Yorker, where she has been a contributor since 2006.
