“Mr. Fagan and Mr. Marsalis are their own griots, and the story they tell is inspiring.”
—The New York Times

Tony and Olivier Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan (The Lion King) and Grammy Award-winning musician, composer, and bandleader Wynton Marsalis return to BAM with the world premiere of Lighthouse/Lightning Rod. Performed by the internationally acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance, set to an original score by Wynton Marsalis (played live by the Wynton Marsalis Septet), and featuring scenic design by visual artist and Guggenheim fellow Alison Saar, Lighthouse/Lightning Rod juxtaposes illusory feelings of security and danger while portraying relationships of depth, conflict, integrity, and hope.

The evening opens with excerpts from the beloved Griot New York (1991 Next Wave). With sets by renowned sculptor Martin Puryear, this celebrated work depicts different eras in the city's history, showcasing Fagan's remarkable choreographic eclecticism and Marsalis' haunting jazz score.
