“…vital and brilliant.”
—The New Yorker
In 1971, a hundred hired-gun photographers fanned out across
the country as part of the EPA’s Project Documerica to capture
America’s sometimes fabled, sometimes fraught relationship to its
land. In Documerica, the adventurous string quartet ETHEL
lends rich new dimension to the images from that project, with help
from projection artist Deborah Johnson (Planetarium, 2013
Winter/Spring Season) and eight wildly disparate composers.
New music by acclaimed contemporary composer Mary Ellen Childs, Grammy Award-winning jazz drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. (Christian McBride Big Band), Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate from the Chickasaw Nation, blues maven James Kimo Williams, and members of ETHEL complements those transfigured images from the EPA archive in this moving meditation on America’s big skies, ghost towns, purple mountain majesties, and pulses of the urban environment.
