BAM DEBUT
Magdi wishes for a better life for her young daughter. Fatima is taking hormone injections as part of her transition. Adam, more than anything, just wants to dance. Throughout Eastern Europe and beyond, the Roma people are striving, with a cultural identity that transcends their absence of a country they can call home.
Choreographer Constanza Macras folds these individuals and their unique stories into a big dance-theater spectacle, featuring 17 Roma performers and five members of Macras’ freewheeling, Berlin-based company DorkyPark sharing the stage. Dispelling the prevailing stereotypes—itinerant free spirits, gypsy fortune tellers, beggars—Open for Everything riffs playfully on Romani dance and music traditions with a live onstage band. The result is a messy, exuberant celebration of humanity.
