(Re)Centering Theater
Infuse your curriculum with important, yet often under taught, theater makers of color in this residency spotlighting playwright and performer Anna Deavere Smith. Students dive into Smith’s acclaimed work Fires in the Mirror, a docudrama-style play in which Smith embodies a wide range of key voices and viewpoints drawn from her interviews about the Crown Heights riots in 90s Brooklyn. After exploring portions of Fires in the Mirror and Smith’s unique acting approach, students create original theater projects inspired by her work.
Program comprises a full-residency of 13 workshops or a mini-residency of 6 workshops, each 45 minutes to 1 hour long, inclusive of asynchronous virtual in-class instruction and a reflection.
Please contact Ava Kinsey (akinsey@bam.org) if you are interested in bringing this residency into your virtual classroom.
