Part of Spring 2021

In conjunction with Arrivals + Departures

BAM spring season artists Yara El-Sherbini and Davina Drummond reflect on their public art installation Arrivals + Departures in this free virtual event, exploring the power of naming in public sculptures and memorials as a personal and potentially radical act. They’ll be joined by three special guests: Jonathan Ryan, President and CEO of the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), Luba Cortés, Immigrant Defense Coordinator at Make the Road New York, and moderator Thomas Keenan, a professor at Bard College and leader of the new integrated curriculum in Human Rights and the Arts through the Open Society University Network.

In conjunction with the discussion, RAICES and Make the Road New York will take over the Arrivals + Departures boards in Brooklyn Borough Hall and BAM’s Instagram account to name births, lives, and deaths that are relevant to their work, inviting us to engage with the installation in new ways.

This event will include ASL interpretation and closed captioning.

BIO

British duo YARA + DAVINA make playful public art that responds to site, context, and audience. Their work is rooted in the everyday, using formats from popular culture to explore the human condition. They've created work for Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the ICA, the Venice Biennale, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the ZKM (Germany), Helsinki International Artist Programme, and more. They are currently at work on a large-scale public piece, called Kick Off, that explores women's football and the power of communal crafting.
