Druid
By Martin McDonagh
Directed by Garry Hynes

“The extraordinary achievement of [The Beauty Queen of Leenane] is that it is wildly funny, deeply affecting and grotesquely macabre all at the same time.”
—The Telegraph (UK)
“The Beauty Queen of Leenane is the cleverest, most cunningly constructed, most assured play in years—and it’s also one of the saddest and sweetest.”
—The Wall Street Journal

Ireland’s esteemed theater company Druid makes its BAM debut with this 20th anniversary revival of Martin McDonagh’s Tony Award-winning pitch-black comedy, the first in his trilogy of plays set in the sodden Irish backwater of Leenane. Forty-year-old spinster Maureen Folan lives with her mother Mag in a dreamless hovel, where the two trade insults and injuries in a vicious cycle of loveless caretaking—until a glimmer of romance for Maureen sets in motion a chain of events as hilarious as it is terrifying. Druid co-founder Marie Mullen, who won a Tony for her performance as Maureen in the original production, ages into the fearsome role of Mag, under the direction of co-founder and artistic director Garry Hynes.

Set design by Francis O’Connor
Lighting design by James F. Ingalls
Sound design by Greg Clarke
