Mantra Percussion
Music by Michael Gordon
Our show:
The New York premiere of Michael Gordon's evening-length
percussion sextet, Timber, for six amplified 2x4s.
Sights and Sounds:
Six wooden 2x4s from a hardware store, suspended over saw horses
and cut to varying lengths to alter their pitch. Contact
microphones capture the boards' unique harmonic profiles, which are
amplified through the sound system, creating kaleidoscopic waves of
cascading polyrhythms and musical lines.
Most underrated quality of a 2x4:
The aurora borealis of sound created by its complex harmonic
spectrum.
Preferred household item to beat repeatedly with mallets:
A metal mixing bowl filled with some water.
The experience of performing Michael Gordon's Timber is
best compared to:
Flying through a nebula in the Andromeda Galaxy.
