Orson Welles’ follow up to Citizen Kane was this masterful account of an aristocratic Indianapolis family’s decline at the turn of the century, deploying dazzlingly expressive mise-en-scène to evoke the look and feel of a vanished era. The film was infamously re-edited by RKO against the director’s wishes, but even studio tampering can’t diminish the poignant power of Welles’ vision.
