  • BAM Film 2025
Directed by Akira Kurosawa (1957)
With Toshirō Mifune, Isuzu Yamada, Takashi Shimura, Akira Kubo, Hiroshi Tachikawa, Minoru Chiaki, Takamaru Sasaki, Gen Shimizu, Kokuten Kōdō
A vivid, visceral Macbeth adaptation, Throne of Blood, directed by Akira Kurosawa, sets Shakespeare’s definitive tale of ambition and duplicity in a ghostly, fog-enshrouded landscape in feudal Japan. As a hardened warrior who rises savagely to power, Toshiro Mifune burns the screen down, as does Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife. This visionary rendering fuses classical Western tragedy with formal elements taken from the Noh style of Japanese theater for an unforgettable cinematic experience.
