Directed by Akira Kurosawa (1985)
With Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu, Mieko Harada
Akira Kurosawa’s Academy Award-winning adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear depicts the disastrous consequences of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji’s (Tatsuya Nakadai) decision to split his kingdom among his three sons. Kurosawa’s third Shakespeare adaptation and his final epic, the film was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences, hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “so moving that the only appropriate response is silence.”
