In the sleepy hamlet of Frontera, two off-duty cops discover a buried skeleton at an old shooting range, prompting an investigation from straight-arrow Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper). Soon it’s revealed the body belongs to Sam’s notoriously corrupt predecessor Charlie Wade (Kris Kristofferson) and a twisty, old-fashioned murder mystery ensues, aided immensely by a killer ensemble cast (Frances McDormand, Elizabeth Peña, Joe Morton and Matthew McConaughey) and music by Mason Daring. Maybe the most celebrated film of John Sayles’ career, Lone Star disentangles Texas mythology with shrewd attention to the shifting mores and demographics of the contemporary West.
