SAFE
One Day in an Over-Policed NYC Public School
Metal detectors… patdowns… penalties… no, it’s not a prison, but a New York City public school. SAFE, a 45-minute musical by writer/director Jess McLeod and songwriter Brian Quijada, chronicles a day in the life of two NYC teens, Zyniah and Fredo, who get pulled out of the metal detector line for patdowns in two different public high schools, triggering two very different days. Presented by the New York Civil Liberties Union and based on interviews with real students, the musical explores how we got here, and how a punitive environment is making kids feel anything but safe.
