One of Sembène’s most coruscatingly funny and indignant films, this adaptation of the director’s novella is a bitterly ironic depiction of a society scarred by colonialism and plagued by corruption and greed.
Following her splashy breakthrough The Lure, the talented Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska returned with this thrilling psychological drama about Alicja (Gabriela Muskała, who also penned the film’s screenplay), an amnesiac whose freewheeling life is disrupted by the discovery of her real identity. Forced to return to a family she remains unable to remember, the willful Alicja chafes against the stultifying demands of her conventional roles as wife, mother, and daughter with ever more worrying results.
