This program of short films showcases the best new work by Caribbean filmmakers, from deeply personal documentary storytelling to a Rastafarian reimagining of Nosferatu.

After languishing in prison for 30 years for a crime she did not commit, a Filipino woman returns to her broken family and discovers that her wealthy onetime lover framed her. Inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s short story “God Sees the Truth, But Waits,” the iconoclastic writer, director, and editor Lav Diaz patiently and profoundly chronicles one woman’s deferred revenge against the elite who robbed her of a future. Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, The Woman Who Left is a scalding, class-conscious exploration of personal retribution and uncommon mercy, filmed in startling black-and-white.
