The Holdovers
- Part of
- BAM Film 2023
The latest from acclaimed director Alexander Payne (The Descendents, Sideways) follows Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham, a curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school in the 70s. Paul is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them—a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa)—and with the school’s head cook (an excellent Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who has just lost a son in Vietnam. Blending cozy nostalgia with the painful realities of grief, The Holdovers captures an ephemeral moment of connection with depth and biting humor.
