Zbigniew Zamachowski brings Chaplinesque grace to the role of Karol Karol, an impotent Polish immigrant living in Paris who, after losing his business, his vengeful wife (Julie Delpy), and his adopted country, recruits a fellow expatriate to smuggle him back to his homeland. The lone comedy of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s landmark Three Colors trilogy, White is a caustic allegory of post-communist Poland and its place in the newly formed European Union and a blue valentine about the toll of martial devotion.
