Gummo
A boy in bunny ears drowns a cat in a barrel of water. A man pimps out his disabled sister. Two skinheads box each other in the kitchen. From Harmony Korine, screenwriter of Kids, comes a haunting portrait of life in Xenia, Ohio in the aftermath of a devastating tornado. This ethereal, often disturbing cinematic mosaic did not receive a wide release and polarized critics for its raw depiction of life in the forgotten corners of America—The New York Times’s Janet Maslin went so far as to declare it the worst movie of the year. Despite its divisiveness, prominent filmmakers lauded Gummo’s visual and narrative style, including Werner Herzog, who read the film as “a true science fiction film in the way it shows a scary vision of the future: a loss of soul, a loss of spirituality.”
Featuring an introduction by writer/curator Dennis Lim preceding the November 15 screening.
