black& loving presents Destiny2

  • BAM Film 2025
black& loving is a film program created by two visual artists in NYC honoring years of Black queer cinema across the African diaspora. This year, in collaboration with BAM, black& loving presents Destiny2, a one-night-only program examining the meaning of destiny and cinematic poetry. Films include Happy birthday, Marsha!, a short about the prolific Marsha P. Johnson in the hours before the Stonewall Riots, and Vintage: Families of Value, a 1995 verite-style doc that follows three sets of queer siblings. black& loving invites audiences to discover the limitless possibilities of cinema while engaging with and honoring the artworks and artists that came before us.

Happy Birthday, Marsha! (2017)
Dirs. Tourmaline & Sasha Wortzel
14min; DCP

This short follows iconic transgender artist and activist Marsha "Pay it No Mind" Johnson in the hours before she ignited the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

Vintage: Families of Value (1995)
Dir. Thomas Allen Harris
72min; Digital

A meditative and reflexive look at Black families through the eyes of Black lesbian and gay siblings, Vintage places the camera in the hands of its subjects, enabling the construction of a collective autobiographical presentation of family. Interweaving conversations among family members, verite-style documentary footage, dramatic portrayals, experimental recreations, visual abstractions, music television strategies, and archival photographs, Thomas Allen Harris’s 1995 film is a rich mosaic of extended black family life.
