In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, NM. Set during the early days of the pandemic, this neo-Western black comedy by Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) mixes social commentary, conspiracy theories, and free-floating anxiety to nerve-rattling effect, playing with isolation and paranoia in ways that still feel eerily present and all too familiar.
