Directed by Jan Švankmajer (1988)
With
Kristýna Kohoutová
Following its release in 1988, The New York Times called this dark, arresting Czech adaptation of Alice in Wonderland “extraordinary,” hailing its unique combination of live action and stop-motion animation as “remarkably fluid.” Alice marked prolific director, animator, writer, playwright, and artist Jan Švankmajer’s first foray into feature-filmmaking, and stars Kristýna Kohoutová as the titular girl whose whose experience of Wonderland resembles not a Disney-fied technicolor playground but a dreary and unsettling textured dreamscape.
