Directed by Gadalla Gubara & Sara Gubara (2007)
With
Gamal Hassan
Despite losing his sight at 80, Gadalla Gubara continued to work, shooting his final film—an interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic novel Les Misérables—at the age of 87 with help from his daughter Sara. Drawing a comparison between the struggles of the French poor depicted in the original work and the plight of post-civil war Sudan, Gubara offers a brilliant (non-musical) reinterpretation of a towering masterwork of 19th century literature, finishing the film just one year before his death in 2008.
