When Anne Gauthier (Anouk Aimée), a widowed script supervisor, meets widower Jean-Louis Duroc (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a handsome race car driver, at their respective children's boarding school, a budding romance blossoms in the shadow of their former relationships. The resulting connection culminates in a final scene that “should go down in history as one of the most romantic ever put to film” (Far Out, UK).
