An actress and new mother (Zita Hanrot) is haunted by voices as she attempts to inhabit the role of surrealist writer Suzanne Césaire in Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich’s bold debut feature. In the sleepy palm groves of the tropics, a small group of filmmakers and actors confront the history of Césaire in her youth, staging scenes from her life and troubling the “paradise” of historical memory. A rich examination of Suzanne’s relationships with her husband, writer and politician Aimé Césaire, and famed surrealist André Breton, this post-biopic brilliantly deconstructs the genre of narrative biographical film.
