The Squid and the Whale - 20th Anniversary

    Part of
  • BAM Film 2025
Directed by Noah Baumbach (2005)
With Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Daniels, Owen Kline, Laura Linney, Halley Feiffer, Anna Paquin
Join writer and director Noah Baumbach and special guests for a 20th-anniversary screening of The Squid and the Whale, Baumbach’s acclaimed third feature. This penetrating and compassionate coming-of-age story chronicles the experiences of two young brothers growing up in 1980s Park Slope, Brooklyn, as they navigate the jagged contours of their parents’ divorce. Anchored by a quartet of beautifully inhabited performances from Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg, and Owen Kline, the film marked a critical development for the filmmaker as he turned toward an increasingly personal style—a move that garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This comedic, poignant feature deftly captures the heartache and confusion of a fracturing family while exploring the gulf between sexes, generations, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Followed by a Q&A with writer/director Noah Baumbach and stars Jeff Daniels and Jesse Eisenberg, moderated by Emily Mortimer
