Deep Crimson

Based on the same true-crime story that inspired Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, this gleefully blood-soaked 1996 thriller involves a lonely, lusty nurse who sacrifices her family and morose stability for the excitement of a robbery and murder spree with a balding con man (Daniel Giménez Cacho, star of Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos and Lucrecia Martel’s Zama). Riffing on the melodramas of the 1940s Golden Age of Mexican Cinema with a dark humor, the film is considered one of Ripstein’s greatest masterpieces, winning Best Screenplay for Paz Alicia Garciadiego at the 1996 Venice Film Festival.
