Deep Crimson

Oct 25—Oct 29, 2025
    Part of
  • Without Limits: The Films of Arturo Ripstein
  • and
  • BAM Film 2025
Directed by Arturo Ripstein (1996)
With Regina Orozco, Daniel Giménez, Cacho Marisa Paredes
Based on the same true-crime story that inspired Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, this gleefully blood-soaked 1996 thriller involves a lonely, lusty nurse who sacrifices her family and morose stability for the excitement of a robbery and murder spree with a balding con man (Daniel Giménez Cacho, star of Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos and Lucrecia Martel’s Zama). Riffing on the melodramas of the 1940s Golden Age of Mexican Cinema with a dark humor, the film is considered one of Ripstein’s greatest masterpieces, winning Best Screenplay for Paz Alicia Garciadiego at the 1996 Venice Film Festival. Newly inducted into the Criterion Collection, this wickedly entertaining melodramatic thriller screens in a 4k restoration of Arturo Ripstein’s director’s cut.
