Directed by Shujun Shi (1983)
In the early 80s, five young women from different backgrounds share a dorm at college. Headstrong orphan Kuang Yalan clashes with privileged Xin Gan, principled class leader Song Ge, gentle Luo Xuemei, and aspiring poet Xia Yu. Tensions rise over misunderstandings, scholarships, and resurfaced secrets between their parents. Through hardship and heartbreak, these roommates gradually come to understand one another over the course of their first semester. Shot almost entirely on the campus of Wuhan University, Girl Students’ Dormitory captures the college life of China’s best and brightest post-Cultural Revolution and a uniquely 80s idealism and optimism.
