Three Films by Heiny Srour
Oct 17—Oct 21, 2025
BAM is thrilled to screen three films by the great Lebanese auteur Heiny Srour for one night only, including a sneak preview of Srour’s work-in-progress epilogue to The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived.
The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived (1974)
Dir. Heiny Srour
In Arabic with English subtitles
62min; DCP
In her bold 1974 work, Srour details the story of a democratic, feminist guerrilla movement involved in the late-60s uprising of Dhofar against the British-backed Sultanate of Oman. Srour’s courageous documentary was the first film directed by an Arab woman ever to screen at Cannes.
The Singing Sheikh (1991)
Dir. Heiny Srour
In Arabic with English subtitles
11min; Digital
Famous throughout the Arab world for his political folk songs, Sheikh Imam Mohammed Ahmad Eissa was considered a voice of the oppressed. Despite being banned from state television and radio, and imprisoned numerous times, the Sheikh always believed that “if a beautiful thing is suppressed today, it will rise tomorrow.”
