Women in Revolt

Wed, Sep 10, 2025
    Part of
  • Paul Reubens Selects
  • and
  • BAM Film 2025
Directed by Paul Morrissey (1971)
With Jackie Curtis, Jackie Kennedy, Holly Woodlawn
Paul Reubens first encountered Andy Warhol as a teenager when he attended screenings of the artist's groundbreaking films at a theater in Tampa, Florida. Reflecting on those formative viewings, Reubens said, “Those people in those movies, those characters I was so attracted to were really doing performance art, were living as conceptual people.” By 1971, Warhol’s cinema was commandeered by Paul Morrissey, the shrewd chronicler of The Factory's denizens. In Women in Revolt, Warhol’s three “glittering facades”—Holly Woodlawn, Jackie Curtis, and Candy Darling—form a clique of “women's libbers,” who viciously satirize the mainstream feminist movement, while upending all established codes of gender. Criminally undershown, BAM is thrilled to present this special screening of a raucous, countercultural triumph.
