The Black Widow (1977)
Dir. Arturo Ripstein
90min
With Isela Vega, Mario Almada, Sergio Jiménez
In Spanish with English subtitles

Based on a novel by the distinguished Mexican poet and playwright Rafael Solana, The Black Widow is among Arturo Ripstein’s more provocative films. In a small Mexican town, an orphan girl assists the parish priest. When the village doctor fails to seduce the girls, he spreads rumors that she is involved with the priest. Facing outrage, the priest locks the girl away—at which point a passionate love affair begins. La Causa, completed a year earlier, is Ripstein’s documentary portrait of United Farm Workers leader and Chicano activist César Chávez, who discusses problems facing the Mexican population in the US.
